How to Find God

Look at the life and teachings of Jesus. Christians believe that he is more than a good man or a prophet, but that he is alive today and actively involved in world affairs. Jesus himself claimed to be God’s son and the saviour of the world. You’ll need to read the accounts of his life in the Bible to make up your own mind if these claims are true because the very first step to finding God is to believe that Jesus Christ really is who he claimed to be.

Look at your own life to see if you measure up to God’s standards. The meaning of the word ‘sin’ is to miss the mark. The Bible actually teaches that everyone has sinned and missed the mark of God’s holy and perfect standard. As a consequence, we are all in need of God’s mercy and forgiveness. All our efforts to improve ourselves by trying to be good are futile because they cannot deal with the problem of sin. The only thing that we can do is to repent, that is to change our minds about the way that we have been living, and come to God and ask him to forgive and save us.

The good news is that God loves you more than you know. When Jesus Christ came into the world he was on a rescue mission. Jesus showed us, by his life, his words and his actions what the character and nature of God is like. Then Jesus dealt with the sin problem once and for all by dying on the cross and taking the punishment that was due to us upon Himself. By dying on the cross Jesus opened the way for us all to have a free and open relationship with God.

To receive this wonderful gift, you need only to believe, tell God that you want to change your life, and submit to Him as Lord (boss) of your life and follow him forever. Becoming a follower of Jesus is a big step. When Jesus comes into your life he may want to make changes, and for some this will be very costly. It is not something that you should do until you are certain that you’re prepared to pay the price.

When you are ready then you only need to ask Jesus himself to forgive you and to fill you with the Holy Spirit. According to the Bible, you should then be baptised as soon as possible as a way of saying ‘God, I need to be washed, please make me clean in your sight’. When the Holy Spirit comes into your life you’ll have a clear assurance that you are God’s child and that your sins are completely forgiven. No more guilt!

There are lots of different kinds of churches, so talk to God and ask him to guide you to the right place and He will surely lead you. The most important thing is to find people who really love Jesus and believe the Bible.

Why the Bible is Important
The Bible contains many accounts of God’s dealings with His people throughout history, and consists of two parts: The Old Testament, which contains the story of creation and God’s dealings with his people and the Jewish nation. This spans hundreds of years and also includes prophecies foretelling the coming of Jesus.

The New Testament gives four separate accounts of the life and ministry of Jesus. Matthew, Mark, Luke & John are eye-witness accounts of Jesus’ teaching and miracles, including his death and resurrection. For people wanting to know what all this is about, these four books are the best places to start.

The fifth book of the New Testament, the books of Acts, records what happened when Jesus’ disciples were filled with the power of the Holy Spirit and then went out to do what Jesus had called them to do. The remaining books of the New Testament were letters written by the apostles to the various churches to teach believers how to live as followers of Jesus and how to overcome particular problems.

The last book of the Bible, the book of Revelation, is a prophetic book containing a message given to the apostle John by Jesus. This tells us about what will happen in the future.
